Review of Legally Blonde
Introduction
The archetypal blonde bimbo gets annoyed and gets even in probably the most outrageous way yet. Elle Woods (Reece Witherspoon), is loved by everyone at school, but gets to be hated by everyone at Harvard, an academic institution at odds with her sense of spare time activities. Her reason for trying to conquer one of the highest law schools in the land is to get her man (Matthew Davis) back, but her man is now involved with another budding legal eagle, the exact opposite of Elle.
Elle has ups and downs along the way and also befriends a manicurist who she also helps out, but finally things turn out good with some lucky legalise and a new found self-confidence.
Video
The video was clean and bright but I couldn`t help but feel it was a little less sharp than it could have been. The lighting and camera work was good, especially on the frequent product placements that appeared throughout the film.
There was some dirt at the start but this was not apparent later in the film.
Audio
The sound was adequate for a 5.1 mix, but not outstanding. The majority of the effects were at the front with the rears being mainly used for canned laughter and the like.
The teeny pop sounds that littered proceedings were clear and `poppy` as one would expect, but did start to blend into one another.
Features
There are plenty of extras, which is nice, even if some of them are not the most interesting. A directors commentary and a narrated deleted scenes section join a featurette, which seems to be mostly about hair (?). There are also trailers and pop videos along with a trivia track.
Conclusion
Well it filled an hour or so! It has to be said that the plot was predictable all the way through and the characters were rather stereotyped. There are some good bits, but they are rare and do not lift the whole above the level of teen feel good film. Some of the characters in the lesser rolls are also quite interesting and deserved to be expanded more, but hey, you can`t have everything!
A supporting cast including a dog with its own wardrobe really sums this one up I`m afraid, which at the end of the day is merely a vehicle for Reece Witherspoon to extend her movie career and add to her C.V.
