Review for WWE: Best of WrestleMania Main Events
The Best of Wrestlemania Main Events (similar to the previous set of Best PPV Main Events) is really an odd set. I would say that I own at least 80% of this set in one form or another and ‘Best’ seems to be an arbitrary word and there does not seem any reason why most of these matches are here. That is not to say that this is not a great set, just an odd one.
The earliest match is from Wrestlemania 3 which is an awful worked match, however that was never the point. The spectacle of Hulk Hogan against Andre the Giant and him slamming the Giant is one of the most iconic moments in WWE history.
We then jump to Wrestlemania 12 (I will come to the matches missed off this set) with the Iron Man match between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart. My opinion is that this is a great beginning and ending, but the actual match is so boring to watch. I understand them including it as it definitely has its moments.
Wrestlemania 17 is next with The Rock against Stone Cold and I do wish they had edited the ending to this match. As fabulous as these two were together, their match at
Wrestlemania 15 was much more satisfying and that ending was just a stun to everyone.
Wrestlemania 19’s Brock Lesnar against Kurt Angle is a fabulous match, again ruined by a botched ending. However, until that infamous Shooting Star Fail, this is a fantastic match and showed why Lesnar was so important. Wrestlemania 22 between John Cena and Shawn Michaels is really a great match, but it is begging for a title change. By this point we were getting tired of John Cena and this would have been a great moment for HBK. A great match to show how great Cena is in the ring.
Wrestlemania 24 and 26 both feature The Undertaker first against Edge and then against Shawn Michaels. Both are fabulous and show just why the Deadman was so good against anyone. I prefer the Michaels match, because at the time there was a feeling that this could be the match that retired him and so had an extra element to it.
Wrestlemania 30 is memorable for being when Daniel Bryan was finally solidified as a Main Eventer. The sight of him with the title (though he had been champion before) was what we had been begging for for years.
Wrestlemania 31 is a great match between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar, made even greater by the appearance of Seth Rollins, cashing in his Money in the Bank and stealing the belt. Possibly one of the most memorable moments in the past ten years.
Finally, we have the first female main event at Wrestlemania 35 between Ronda Rousey, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch. I always thought this should have been a two falls match as both belts were on the line, but the match was great, not perfect and the ending was a little botched. This was still a great match and the sight of The Man (similar to Daniel Bryan) was what we had been begging for for years.
None of these matches are unwatchable and I really enjoyed reliving some of these moments. It would have been nice to have had some recaps of the other matches that were missed out or maybe an idea as to how this list was compiled. Notable missing matches are Wrestlemania 4 Macho Man Randy Savage against Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase, Wrestlemania 6 Ultimate Warrior against Hulk Hogan (which I am shocked is not included), Wrestlemania 15 Stone Cold against The Rock, but I am sure we all have our own ‘How could they forget?’ matches.
As on overview of Wrestlemania Main Events, this set is fine, but as all of this is available elsewhere it could have had some interviews from past and present superstars to discuss why these matches are the best, instead it feels like this is just a set for those who like physical media and enjoy debating over what is great.
Is this the Best? Not in my opinion, but there are certainly some of the Best Main Events that have been… so far.
