Review for WWE Royal Rumble 2021

The Royal Rumble is one of my favourite things in the wrestling world. The sight of the superstars who often would never be anywhere near each other going head to head was always exciting. Waiting for that countdown, waiting for buzzer and speculating on who is going on to Wrestlemania has made this one of the most exciting and important PPV events of the year.

This year was no different with both the Men's an Women's match ending with a very surprising winner and both ones that I had no problem with, which has been the first for a while. This event was a little up and down in regards to great matches and moments, but thankfully the two Rumbles made up for it. Though I will say can they not let Jerry Lawler talk over another Women's Rumble as it felt very sleazy.

Goldberg facing Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship was a pathethic match. We have all heard the stories about how Goldberg is only coming back for paychecks and after the debacle against The Undertaker I don't understand why this would be booked. It ended exactly how you expected and at least it was short.

Sasha Banks puts her Smackdown Women's Championship against Carmella which was a very basic match using Reginald far too much and was just disappointing all round. The Last Man Standing match for the Universal Championship between Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens was an insane match with some incredible moments, it was just sadly let down by a bad ending which ended with a whimper rather than a bang.

The appearance by Bad Bunny singing a Booker T song was a bit bizarre and his winning of the 24/7 Title was even stranger, but it could have been a lot worse.

As this was on Blu-ray I waited excitedly to see what they would include to warrant this treatment. Sadly, it is simply three matches and a signing segment from Smackdown. I am baffled by this and feel that WWE really needs to go back and look at some of their old DVD sets which would often include more than what is here on this vastly superior format. We would usually get some highlight reels, promos for the event or specific matches and aftermath thoughts by those involved. With WWE having so many shows like the Kickoff Panel and The Bump it is shocking that they don't utilize these to make these sets more worthwhile.

The Kickoff match was a shocker to see Charlotte and Asuka in such a position defending their WWE Women's tag belts against Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax. This match was great and these four work really well together. I am not sure about the Baszler/Jax tag team and feel they are a little wasted, but it was definitely a good match.

From WWE Backstage there is a match between Tamina and Natalya. The match was for the Number 30 spot, but the match itself was not great and this is a shame. From Raw we have a great match between Drew Mcintyre and Keith Lee which was really only here to set up the Goldberg/McIntyre match which was fine.

Finally, we have the Roman Reigns/Adam Pearce contract signing which was a great double-cross, but could have easily have been told in a 2-3 min montage.

Royal Rumble 2021 benefits from having two of the most entertaining Rumble matches in a long time and despite the lacklustre undercard, this is not why we are watching this event. If you are a fan of exciting moments then these two matches have enough to keep you entertained it is just a shame that WWE still does not use the Blu-ray capacity more to make it a must have item.
