Review for WWE CHRISTMAS COLLECTION
When you think of Christmas you think of Santa, Reindeers, Presents, Stockings, Snowmen and lots of other festive things. But what you may not think of is WWE. Well, over the past they have proven to include certain festive elements to their show and here they are all collected for our amusement.
Self proclaimed 'Santa Fantatic' the Hall of Famer Mick Foley, along with his daughter Noelle are showing us just how that has been done over the years. These include a number of vignettes, matches and mayhem that has happened over the years featuring jolly old St Nick or the general theme of Christmas. In between archive clips we see Mick and his daughter trying to find Santa and these are amusing, but most are very skippable.
Archive footage includes Mankind facing Santa Claus in a Boiler Room Brawl which was a little odd to say the very least, Mick Foley again and JBL dressed as Santa in a No Ho-Ho-Ho Holds Barred match which is fine.
For some reason, WWE also wants to remember the awful gimmick Xanda Klaus who came from the South Pole in a terrible jobber match. Bubba Claus (Bubba Ray from the Dudley Boyz) against Tajiri Claus which is actually pretty good as a match.
Bobby The Brain Heenan trying to ruin Christmas which is just mean and Gorilla Monsoon and Roddy Piper's reaction is just as mad. Santino also tries to do this, but he is interrupted by John Cena which leads to a good match between Santino and Beth Phoenix against John Cena and a returning Trish Stratus, who looks amazing.
A number of matches come from a special Christmas Smackdown episode which is nice, though most have very little if nothing to do with Christmas. Kofi Kingston vs. Tyson Kidd is great, action-packed match which, apart from Kofi putting a Reindeer hat on, has nothing to do with it. Randy Orton vs. David Otunga in a Miracle on 34th Street Fight looks more like it. Just a shame that it isn't a particularly good match. A Battle Royal with the winner getting a wish granted by Santa is fun and followed by a pretty good backstage segment that made me smile.
Alberto Del Rio running over Santa was a little extreme, with some very bizarre backstage segments with Santa being treated. The fact that it leads to an incredibly boring Miracle on 34th Street Fight between Del Rio and Cena makes it all even worse. There is a bizarre mashup of superstars reading versions of The Night Before Christms. This includes people like Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Big Show, Lou Albano amongst others.
From a Raw Christmas Special they have Mark Henry and Damien Sandow as Good and Bad Santa is a terrible match, but I didn't expect anything less from these two. Fandango vs. Dolph Ziggler is a good match, despite the odd stipulation. It's always great to see Summer Rae though. The Six Diva Santa's Helper's Match features Alicia Fox, Emma and Naomi against Cameron, Summer Rae and Paige. All six dressed as sexy Santa's Helpers is nice, shame the match is not great to watch despite the talent of Paige in the match.
Bray Wyatt against Dean Ambrose in Miracle on 34th Street Fight (They really liked that, didn't they?) which is just fantastic. Both put on a PPV calibre match and there was something funny about the crowd chanting 'Merry Christmas'. This match is full of crazy moments and certainly a great match to remember.
This special is a little odd to say the least. I understand what they were trying to do and in some ways it worked, but I think the overall presentation was a little off. The vignettes with Mick Foley reminded me of the awful days of Todd Pentigall and Sean Mooney from the old WWF compilations of the 1990s. Most were not funnyand despite how lovable Mick Foley is, it just made me want to skip to the next segment.
The matches and moments are fun, but some are a little pointless and so slight in their relation to Christmas it is amazing. The fact they don't include things like Stone Cold giving Santa the Stone Cold Stunner or the Sandman caning him in ECW is shocking. The fact they wanted me to remember awful things like Xanta Klaus, the creepy Bobby Heenan ruining Christmas or Del Rio running over Santa makes me wonder who selected this stuff? If you wanted something Christmassy to watch from WWE then this is perfect, but if you may want to keep the remote in your hand as you may find yourself Ho-Ho-Hovering over the Fast Forward button.
