50th Anniversary release of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg comes to Blu-ray and DVD in February

Let's start the week off with a StudioCanal 50th Anniversary release of French new wave cinema classic The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, out on Blu-ray and DVD this coming 10th February.

The 1964 film written and directed by Jacques Demy, stars Catherine Deneuve, Nino Castelnuovo and Marc Michel, with music by Michel Legrand.

Presented in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio, the audio has been remastered in 5.1 Dolby Digital and 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio depending on the version, in French with English subtitles, extras include interviews with Catherine Deneuve, Geoff Andrew and Virginie Ledoyen.

Both releases also feature the Once Upon a Time documentary, The World of Jacques Demy documentary, restoration featurette, stills gallery and trailers. The recommended retail price will be £15.99 for the standard definition version, and £22.99 for the HD release.

Guy Foucher, a 20-year-old French auto mechanic, has fallen in love with 17-year-old Geneviève Emery, an employee in her widowed mother's chic but financially embattled umbrella shop. On the evening before Guy is to leave for a two-year tour of combat in Algeria, the pair share a passionate night.

Geneviève becomes pregnant and then must choose between waiting for Guy's return or accepting an attractive offer of marriage from a wealthy diamond merchant.
