Review of She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
Introduction
Custer is dead, the Indians rise all over the west. The retiring Captain Brittles, is ordered to bring the daughter of his Major to the next Post station.
Unhappy with this order he nonetheless carries it out. Indians are attacking all over, and when he reaches the station, it is destroyed. The people have lived there are dead.
Brittle tries to negotiate peace with the Indians, but to no avail. A younger Chief has taken charge and he wants to fight, as does brittles replacement.
New orders arrive, a command in the Scouts.
Life just isn`t fair.
Video
A 4:3 image that is a fine example of a western film. It`s soft and grainy and full of memories of rainy Saturday afternoons or school holidays.
The image does vary in quality during the film, which is disappointing, although when it is good, the colours are nicely presented. The less said about the bad bits the better I`m afraid.
Audio
Two channel audio is as good as it gets. Does a good job, but it`s no show stopper.
Features
A single trailer, but it is worth watching. It always amazes me how different the trailers have become over time. This one lasts an age and is quite amusing compared to today`s examples.
Conclusion
This is often referred to as John Ford`s finest, and I find no reason to disagree. John Wayne is superb in one of his finest performances as an older character. The script is very well written with a good deal of humour in just the right places.
I would recommend this film to all, and thoroughly enjoyed watching it.
