Milton Jones: Lion Whisperer
Milton Jones: Lion Whisperer Live
Milton Jones will be a familiar face, if not name, to regular viewers of Mock The Week. He's the weird one in the Hawaiian shirts with the rather surreal one-liners. You know which one I mean? Of course, you do.
Lion Whisperer, named after one of the jokes in his routine, is Milton's second live stand-up DVD, filmed at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London. And for nearly an hour you get the same sort of strange jokes one after the other. And this is both a problem and not. For starters, it's almost as if Milton Jones recognises he can't keep up the quality for a full hour so we get this weird and mostly unfunny (to me) routine where he pretends to be his grandfather - and oddly, the DVD kicks off with a mini segment from this character as well.
There are three types of jokes in Milton's reportoire:
1, the jokes that are funny
2. the jokes that aren't
3. the jokes that don't seem to go anywhere until he adds another and all of a sudden become funny
Luckily in the case of Milton Jones, there's the first set in abundance, a few of the second and a few of the third. So overall, it works well but would be better if he dropped the grandfather impersonation as that just feels laboured.
It's Christmas, and more than a few people will find a comedy DVD in their Christmas stocking, you could do worse than this…
