Review for WWE Wrestling's Highest Flyers
I love high flying wrestling. Apart from tag teams wrestling it is possibly my favourite kind and so I salivated when I heard about this set. My expectations are not exactly completely satisfied by this set, however this is a great set all teh same. Introduced by Josh Matthews and as with a lot of the 'Best of' sets that WWE have produced over the years, it consists of a one minute highlight reel followed by a match, rinse and repeat. Though I understand why they do this, it is simply not enough to convey just how good someone like Ricky Steamboat or Brian Pillman actually were. I actually enjoyed the montages more than the matches and maybe if they had some people commenting on various people over and hour or so we could understand why these particular people were on here. Then the other two disks could be dedicated to matches. The other odd thing is the layout of the people covered. If this had been chronilogical showing the difference between how someone like Shawn Michaels was in the early 90s to later on Evan Bourne or John Morrison it would make sense, but the jumps go back and forth through history to the point where you are unsure who copied or was inspired by who. I think this simple ordering of them would have made it a lot more enjoyable.
When the DVD begins, Josh Matthews states these are the Top Twenty High Flyers and though many of them I have no problem with such as RVD, Brian Pillman, Rey Mysterio, Eddie Guerrero and Ricky Steamboat, but some are a little questionable. Some like Super Crazy, Flash Funk and Evan Bourne... Good? Of course. The Best? When people like Dynamite Kid is not mentioned and even Jushin Liger is not given his own section I begin to wonder who created this list? And though tag teams like Rock n Roll Express, MNM and The Rockers are shown in the Tag Team section they really should have been represented with a few other matches.
My only other real issue is the lack of proper archive footage. Despite owning vast amounts of video footage from numerous companies, there is nothing here from AWA, WCCW or even the early NWA and the oldest match is from the 1980s with the majority coming from the 1990s. However, I was glad that the set includes numerous matches from WCW and ECW and wasn't just totally dominated by the WWE. Over the twenty-seven matches there are some amazing matches. In fact, I don't think that there is a single match on this set that isn't great and though I would question whether the Shawn Michaels vs. Vader was HBK's best 'high flying' match or whether they should have included the No Mercy 1999 Ladder Match between Edge and Christian and The Hardyz over the Wrestlemania 2000 match, it is still a great match. The highlights for me include Great Muta vs Sting, Sabu vs Rob Van Dam, Eddie Guerrero vs Dean Malenko, Ricky Steamboat vs Brian Pillman and the wonderful match between Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero. As I say, there is not one bad match on this and if you are a fan of high flying action this is certainly one of the best sets for it.
Wrestling's Highest Flyers with a few tweeking in how it was presented could have been an amazing set, however it is still a great set, a little unfocused, but with some of the best high flying wrestling that you will ever see and for those who enjoy Cruiserweight wrestling, Lucha or Japanese-style wrestling this is definitely the set for you.
