WWE Summerslam 2009
WWE's summer event is usually the second biggest PPV event of the year, but watching this years' you wouldn't have known it. Though there are a number of good matches during this PPV there is nothing on this PPV that I hadn't seen before... and in some cases too many times... Though I enjoyed watching it, there is not a great deal of stuff here that I would re-watch more than a few times.
Intercontinental Championship
Rey Mysterio vs. Dolph Ziggler
Didn't I just watch this match? It's true, I had and unlike my recent revisiting of back to back Benoit/Angle matches this is not the same. Not disputing it is still a good match, but as no one cares about Ziggler and Rey has done much better it is a match that won't be remembered beyond the first viewing.
Jack Swagger vs. MVP
This is a fairly interesting match. Both are fairly new to the WWE and so you can't expect a main event calibre match, but despite that both put on a very entertaining match. Though Swagger needs to dial down the amateur wrestling thing and MVP the obvious Rock impersonation, but it was still a good match to watch.
WWE Unified Tag Team Championship
Chris Jericho and Big Show vs. Cryme Tyme
When will they actually create a 'unified' belt rather than carrying the old belts from Raw and Smackdown? If you don't show the celebs that they say are in the arena, it kinda' makes Chris Jerichos' speech a little redundant. This match was ok, but actually should have been a lot better when you consider the talent on offer.
Kane vs. Great Khali
When I look at who is in this match I have no expectations for the match at all. This is probably just as well, but the match is certainly not as bad as it could have been. It was a lot of stomps and clubbing blows, but it's actually not that bad and watching two men this big going at it has an interesting dynamic when it's usually just miss-matched squashes from either of them. But it could have been much worse.
DX vs. The Legacy
When people complain and moan about Triple H and Shawn Michaels never 'putting over' anyone they will look to this feud and just how much they did to put these two young stars over. It has to be noted that when Triple H and Shawn Michaels are paired up in DX it sure is fun and although it can be a bit overkill in large doses, in smaller ones like this it is perfect. Their match against Legacy is one of the highlights of the night and a great example of tag team wrestling from all involved.
ECW Championship
Christian vs. William Regal
I keep waiting for Christian to show everyone just how good he is, but this match isn't it. If only Christian and Regal had been given more time rather than this waste of time lasting only a few seconds. Horrible WWE Horrible!
WWE Championship
Randy Orton vs. John Cena
How many times do I have to see this match before WWE realises that no one cares? I get that John Cena is the biggest draw of WWE and that Orton is their biggest heel, but I have simply lost count of the number of times I have seen them wrestle. This was an ok match, but again nothing special and I'm sure someone in the creative thought the way the match was handled was creative, but I found incredibly dumb.
TLC World Heavyweight Championship
Jeff Hardy vs. CM Punk
However, I could watch these two wrestle every night for a year. Hypocritical? Of course it is. But it's a bit like saying would I prefer to eat a £1 hamburger or a £50 steak every night. This match was just amazing. These two are simply the best at this and you can understand why WWE decided to run with this feud and as long as they are given the time to put on matches like this, it will never get boring.
15 women battle royale which isn't even shown in full. Not saying this would have been a five star classic, but if they are going to include it they should have at least included the whole thing. The highlight of this involves Chavo Guerrero, though it's probably not part of that bigger picture he keeps telling us to look for. With no other extras this is a shame when you consider the amount of footage in the middle of the PPV for the Axxess event and the fact that Summerslam is usually WWE's second biggest PPV.
Summerslam 2009 was not a bad PPV... but sadly it is a bad DVD. If you watched it live you may want to relive the excellent TLC match and maybe a few others, but sadly there's very little else to recommend from it. Shame!
