Time is running out
The sixth (but my first) book in Alex Kava's Maggie O'Dell series, about an FBI profiler.
The book starts out by playing on a stereotype - the doughnut eating American cop. At FBI headquarters, two senior agents take their pick from a freshly delivered box of doughnuts, when one of them spots a note at the bottom of the box:-
CALL ME GOD.
THERE WILL BE A CRASH TODAY.
At 13949 ELK GROVE
10 AM
I'D HATE FOR YOU TO MISS IT.
I AM GOD.
P.S.YOUR CHILDREN ARE NOT SAFE ANYWHERE AT ANY TIME.
They race to the scene to find out what is happening, and they are completely unprepared for what they find. The crash will not be physical (the bomb they were expecting) - it will be medical.
The story moves along at a fast pace, and there are plenty of twists and turns along the way. At various points I was reminded of Michael Crichton's "The Andromeda Strain", although nobody says "let's go back to the rock and see it at 440". There are also some clever references to real-life American crimes woven in too, including the DC snipers and the Unabomber. If you're not up on your US news, these may pass you by.
All in all it's a pretty good read and fans of Patterson, Deaver, Connelly et al will certainly enjoy it. I must admit to feeling slightly annoyed by the rather rushed ending which leaves too much up in the air, but I'm giving the benefit of the doubt that the author will resolve some of these issues in the next book. Although that might confuse anyone who reads it without reading this first!
I'll definitely be reading others in the series.
