Olivia and Jack are the most popular names in Britain

Olivia and Jack are the most popular names in Britain, it emerged yesterday.

The elegant female first name reclaimed the top spot from Grace after just twelve months.

Grace - made famous by Hollywood screen siren Grace Kelly - slipped back into third place behind Ruby, the name of singer Charlotte Church's baby daughter.

Jack, which has been top for 14 years since it took over from Thomas, retained its place despite stiff competition from Oliver.

Emily, Jessica, Sophie, Chloe, Lily, Mia and Lucy completed the top ten compiled from a national survey of 380,000 babies born in 2008 by top parenting club Bounty.

The biggest movers were Isla, which climbed from 58th to 35th and the 1960s inspired Summer which climbed 28 places from 44th to 16th.

Ava - the name of Myleene Klass's daughter - also leapt 15 places to 19th.

The long and painful demise of singer Amy Winehouse is clearly having an affect on the popularity of the first name with Amy dropping three places to 23rd.

But it seems parents are not put off by her wayward on-off husband Blake Fielder-Civil as Blake has appeared in the top 100 for the first time.

Holly, the name of Davina McCall and Richard Branson's daughters, is clearly suffering from fatigue, dropping six places to 25th.

Rebecca is also on the wane, again falling, this time from 32nd to 48th, as is Courtney which fell 16 places to 88th.

Theo, obviously inspired by England's teen football hero Theo Walcott, is among the biggest climbers in the boys list rising from 70th to 58th.

The number of Rileys being born are also on the increase along with boys called Ewan and Leon.

Celeb inspired Zac, name of High School Musical actor Zac Efron, Jude, as in Jude Law and the American moniker Cody are also new entries.

Third among boys was Harry, followed by Charlie, Alfie, Thomas and Joshua, Daniel and James.

Liam and Dylan broke into the top 20 for the first time replacing Ryan and Luke while Callum also slipped significantly - from 13th to 22nd.

Names which vanished completely from the Bounty top 100 are Hollie, Tegan, Patrick, Dominic and Gabriel.

Among those which are beginning to see a revival are a string of those made famous by Hollywood stars or movies such as Sofia, Julia, Darcy and Amelie.

The more traditional Rose, Connie and Heidi are also back in the top 100.

Faye Mingo of Bounty said "The Bounty Baby Name Poll shows that despite the economic downturn parents are continuing to be creative and inspirational about the names they choose for their children.

"Some parents want a name that's totally unique, and names such as Zebedee, Selim and Zenon are now emerging and growing in popularity. Others are simply breaking with convention and becoming bolder in their choice of names.

"Take Biblical names for example, Samuel and Matthew still remain popular but Mark, Luke and John have definitely fallen out of favour and names like Joshua, Jacob, Noah and Isaac are becoming their contemporaries.

"In fact, boy's names have witnessed the biggest changes over the last decade as parents are increasingly influenced by American culture and celebrity trends relating to films and sports personalities.

"It's fair to say that whilst Barack may be growing in popularity in America, British politicians certainly don't influence our choice of names here in the UK, yet traditional royal names continue to reign supreme in the boys Top 100 in respect of the more traditional name choices.

"Whereas in the girls' Top 100, only Victoria and Elizabeth that take their influence from royalty and modern day princesses like Beatrice, Eugenie and Zara Phillips don't even feature in the charts. Instead, parents are more likely to name girls after a well known movie star or celebrity.

"Parents also more likely to copy celebrities own choices of baby girls names perhaps as a way of reflecting the aspirations that they have for their children. Sometimes these names work well, take for example Ava and Ruby daughters of Mylene Klass and Charlotte Church but it could be a bit bizarre to hear Shiloh or Suri shouted out in the supermarket.

"One celebrity baby name that we don't anticipate will be boosted is Ulrika Johnson who picked the name Malcolm for her fourth child born in June. The name was her husband's choice and whilst she apparently told husband number three, US born advertising executive Brian Monet, that Malcolm was not a cool name in Britain she gradually I 'warmed to the idea'.

"Naming you child is a decision that they will live with for a lifetime, yet whatever moniker you give your child they will almost always grow into it."

The study showed how younger mums are most obsessed with copying names of celebrities and are more likely to give their babies names, such as Jayden, Tyler, Lewis, Ryan and Dylan while mums over 40 go for more traditional names such as William, Thomas, Joshua and Harry.
