WWE: Armageddon 2007

Introduction
The final WWE pay-per-view event of the year, Armageddon, came off what was a well-received Survivor Series show, which featured the return of Edge during a strong Batista vs The Undertaker "Hell in a Cell" match.

One month later, the three were paired in a Triple Threat match, on what on paper was a star-studded show, which also saw Triple-H battle Jeff Hardy, Shawn Michaels face Mr Kennedy, and Randy Orton defend the WWE Championship against the returning Chris Jericho.

Armageddon took place on 16th December 2007, from the Mellon Arena in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.

Video:
Video is presented in 4:3 fullscreen PAL, and is very good for a DVD of this genre. Production values are typically high, with lots of pyrotechnics used to enhance the spectacular nature of the event. But more importantly, the ringside area is very well lit, making the in-ring action easy to view.

The transfer to DVD is also very good, with few noticeable digital artefacts.





Audio:
Audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1, and is also very good for a DVD of this genre. The increased capability of 5.1, over the regular 2.0, is put to good use, creating more of an "in the arena" atmosphere, with the surrounds offering mostly crowd noise, and the sound of the referee's count. It's a good, clean mix which allows every part of this busy event to be well heard.

For international viewers, there are also 2.0 tracks available in Italian, German, Spanish, and French. There are also subtitles in Dutch, Portuguese, and Greek.





Extras:
Just one exceptionally short (1:30) extra here, which is a highlight video of Mr McMahon announcing the name of the "Greatest Superstar in Raw History". It's good for one viewing, but for little after that.





Overall:
The final WWE pay-per-view event of 2007 got underway with a Title match, as MVP defended the U.S Title against Rey Mysterio. This was a good bout, right up until a dreadful finish. It's hard to understand the psychology of putting everyone in a bad mood during the very first match of the show.

Speaking of bad moods, the proceeding Mark Henry & Big Daddy V vs Kane & CM Punk match was no proverbial aspirin, but at least Shawn Michaels and Mr Kennedy then had a fun match, which featured a clever ending.

Much of the talk prior to Armageddon was about whether Jeff Hardy could finally make the "step up", and earn himself a WWE Championship match with a win over Triple-H. In any case, their bout here was a good match, with a great story, even if the crowd weren't as into it as one might expect.

Sadly, we were all brought back down to earth in the next encounter, as The Great Khali did his very best to make even Finlay look like a wrestling novice, before Chris Jericho faced Randy Orton for the WWE Title. This was a very good match, but unfortunately it was marred once again by an unsatisfactory finish.

After another horrendous Diva match where Beth Phoenix faced Mickie James, the main event of Batista vs The Undertaker vs Edge in a Triple Threat delivered to an extent, in the bout for the World Heavyweight Championship. Once more, it had a finish that was all too typical of WWE, but the majority of this was very watchable, with every performer playing their part.





Overall, Armageddon 2007 was much more of a consistent event than many over the previous twelve months. Certainly, there were dips in the action, but MVP vs Mysterio, Michaels vs Kennedy, Triple-H vs Hardy, Jericho vs Orton (which would have been the match of the night had it not been for the finish), and the main event Triple Threat match were all entertaining.

With that in mind, Armageddon 2007 is an event that is well worth adding to your wrestling collection.
